Double Play 2: “Heartbeats”

Another day, another interesting pairing of approaches to a particular tune. Today it’s “Heartbeats” – originally a shivery slice of  lead saws, thuddy drums and wailing from enigmatic Swedes The Knife, and as interpreted in fluttery acoustic form by Jose Gonzalez, who is also Swedish!

On to the listening! Comment furiously (or vote) in support of your preferred version – it makes me so happy to see you take a stand!

Last night I came upon the chance to shoot these iconic members of the Canadian rock scene along with up-and-comers Hey Rosetta! Unfortunately, despite my fondness for the openers’ sound, I only arrived for the very tail of their set – coinciding with the big, sweeping epicosity of numbers like “Yer Spring” and my personal fave “Red Heart.” This was my second time back to the gloriously pretty Deer Lake Park in Burnaby, having gone many years ago for a truly insane White Stripes show. Weather and madness were under a bit more control last night, but the show had all the fury and craft that a longstanding band like the Hip can be counted on to deliver. Continue reading

From The Field: Vancouver Summer Live!

It should be pretty obvious by now that Turntable Scraps has completed its move across the country back to the familiar shores of Vancouver. A new era has dawned! And what great coincidence that the city of Vancouver itself is turning 125 years old this year, sparking much conversation about the right way to mark the passing of an era in the city’s history. Someone got the smart idea to celebrate this big three-digit birthday, and the city decided to throw it in style by inviting a big bunch of hometown musicians, all of the finest calibre, to perform for free in the sunny, seaside park at Brockton Point for Vancouver Summer Live.

I hope that guy gets a big Goddamn raise. Continue reading

New Stuff! The Pack A.D Announce “Unpersons.”

Hey folks! I’m moving back to Vancouver in mere days, so here’s a remarkably coincidental bit of news about a band from that very city! Broadcasts coming down the tubes indicate that a longtime Turntable Scraps playlist fixture, wicked Vantown rock duo The Pack A.D. (fresh from their set at NXNE that I am still super sore about missing) are storming out of the studio with a brand new album! The new disc (hopefully by the time September rolls around albums will still be available on discs) birthed from the mystical combined powers of Maya Miller and Becky Black is to be called Unpersons and it’s set for release on September 13 of this year on Mint Records!

The band recently posted this handy YouTube message to their fans. It is highly informative. You should click it. No, really.

What I really want to know is – where does The Pack A.D. go for their takeout Indian food fix?

(ALSO: If anyone from Hive Studios is reading this – I’m an incoming production and audio engineering student at Nimbus Recording Arts. I enjoy nerding out about sound, playing bass, and long walks on the beach. Let’s make a love connection.)
